Goat curry – South Indian style

Non spicy, tasty, creamy goat meat curry that is also easy to cook. That’s a winning combination, don’t you think. The recipe is little similar to the Spicy Beef gravy recipe, but differs in a few steps and is more hearty and tastier with milder spice levels.

The following is the list of items required to make this awesome dish. This dish goes really well with chapathi, roti, naan, idly, dosa, rice, etc.

Lets go straight to the ingredients

Required ingredients

  • Goat 3 lbs, cut to about 1 inch pieces, washed and soaked in cold water for about 1/2 hour
  • Red onion 3 medium size, finely chopped
  • Fresh garlic, 1 bulb, skin removed and finely shopped
  • Fresh ginger, 3 inch piece, skin removed and finely chopped
  • Green Chillies, 4 to 7, as per taste
  • White potato 3 large size, skinned and cut into 2 inch pieces, soaked in water
  • Plain Yogurt, 2 large cups
  • Chopped coriander leaves, 1 cup
  • Vegetable oil, about 1/2 cup
  • Masala powders
    • Garam masala powder – 1 tblsp
    • Red Kashmir chilli powder – 2 tblsp
    • Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
    • Coriander powder – 2 tblsp
    • Cumin powder – 1 tbslp
    • Salt – about 1/2 tbslp. You can always add more later if needed

And finally some dry spice

  • Bayleaf
  • Cardamom
  • Elaichi
  • Fennel seed
  • Cinamon stick

Here I have chopped garlic, ginger and green chillies.

And finally, chopped onions. Onions are a must have ingredient in most of South Indian dishes, especially non veg.

Now the steps

  • Take a large pan with lid
  • Switch on stove and set to 90% heat.
  • Place pan on the stove and add oil
  • Once oil is hot add all the dry spice listed above and fry for about 1/2 minute
  • Add the chopped onion and fry till golden brown
  • Once onions are well fried, add chopped ginger, garlic and whole green chillies
  • Fry until the green chillies are soft and well cooked ( Could look like below)
  • Now add meat and fry for about 1 minute
  • Add coriander and fry for about 1/2 minute
  • After meat is full covered with the onion base, add all the masala powder items. Add some more oil and fry for about 3 minutes. Make sure to stir as required to avoid over frying of the spices.
  • Now add the potatoes and fry with the masala and meat for about 2 minutes.
  • Add 2 cups plain yogurt and mix well
  • After about a minute add 2 cups of water
  • Once it starts to boil, reduce flame to 35%
  • Cover the pan and cook for about 25 minutes
  • After 25 minutes of slow cooking, the dish should look like below

Wow, beautiful tasty goat curry is now ready. Taste and add a bit more salt if required before serving.
